Would this be a good controller as a starter?

I'd go with the UC100 over that.
Even better, look for an Ethernet connected controller, like the UC300eth or UC400eth.
The AXBB-E is another good option.Last edited by AndyUK; 28-06-2019 at 01:31 PM.

A CSMIO by CS Labs is a much better bet. There is know need for a further breakout board and there is full back up. Don,t buy one from the UK. Buy from Poland, I have tried all sorts of boards, but this is the easiest to use and works very well in deed. I have two, one for the lathe and one for the router.

The AXBB-E is a better choice than the UC400ETH. Similar price, more features, and no need for breakout boards.
I would NOT recommend using Mach3, as it's basically obsolete these days.
I'd either use the AXBB-E with UCCNC, or a CS Labs board with their own SIM CNC software.Gerry

No, don't be so cheap, buy decent equipment from a reputable supplier and first be sure that they really do support their hardware, and with what Mach3 Version(s) - that will never happen with cheap shit direct from China.
Whilst Mach3 is basically an Orphan there are stable versions which just work just fine with various bits of hardware, don't let some jerk with a Hobby Horse dissuade you from it, it does a decent job of full synchronous 4-Axis, even through a Parallel Port, up until this year I made some seriously complex and tiny parts on an ex-educational desktop mill with Mach3. I bought a 3 phase 4-Axis VMC with tool changer and a Siemens controller this year and a friend persuaded me to sell him my old 4-axis system as it does more than he needs
If rejecting Mach3 do consider that Stand Alone Controllers are now a reasonably priced option and will free you from having a PC running the show, or you could go Linux if you have the time to invest in a system developed by a committee of non-machinists! :DYou think that's too expensive? You're not a Model Engineer are you? :D
