strange object.... ill assume the cam drops off the lug repetativly dropping the bowl onto the rubber.... i can only think its to aggitate something that is difficult to handle
looks simple enough to make the cam etc.... its been a while since i did a bit of plannishing :) (is that how you spell it)
panel beating the bowl would be interesting... probably not rocket science ... bag of sand, leather mallet and some elbow grease
automatic GOLD panning machine!!! youve found gold at the bottom of your garden :)
EDIT: its a brass bowl... i assumed copper for some reason.... not sure you would have much fun beating brass :)

The Fall cone test apparatus is an alternative method to the Casagrande Device in measuring the Liquid Limit of a soil sample (See:Atterberg Limits). It is usually considered to be a more scientific approach because it is based less upon human judgment.[1] In this method, a sample is placed in a 55 mm diameter, 40 mm deep metal cup. A stainless steel cone weighing 80 g (including the shaft) and having a 30° angle is positioned so that its tip just touches the sample. The cone is released for 5 seconds so that it may penetrate the soil. The liquid limit is defined as the water content of the soil which allows the cone to penetrate exactly 20 mm during that period of time. Because it is difficult to obtain a test with exactly 20 mm penetration, the procedure is performed multiple times with a range of water contents and the results are interpolated

Mark, you have way too much time on your hands :) lol
It is indeed a Casagrande Device...
However the need to construct it has passed as 'The Clay Research Group' actually publish the info I needed, which is the Plasticity Index of the clay in my garden (well, in the post code area), and I'm going to have to make the hole deeper around the edge by a good 150mm :(Last edited by irving2008; 21-09-2012 at 11:45 AM.

Ah... it performs a similar function to a device they used on the TV program Coast, for one of the tests they did when comparing the sands of different beaches to determine which beach had the best type of sand for building sand castles.

Hmm too late for this one... my sister is currently working at a soil testing company so I might have had a chance of guessing that!
What's so difficult about beating brass? I've done it before with copper to make end caps for a boiler. Is it just that the material is harder than copper? (Edit:) I guess it's harder to anneal brass without accidently melting it, but hand beaten brass bowls do exist:

Plasma charged magnetic pulse ring centrifuge.. basically it’s mass increases until it counters the earth gravity, called the Lagrange point, the down side is that it will crush you to a micron thick along with the entire contents of a small city you happen to be standing in. oh and you would need a small fusion reactor ( not that big to be honest) A . to supply the plasma and B. the power to contain the plasma.. simples stkit ( sound a TV Meer cat makes)
The Rhino one.. now that’s tricky ! lol
