Thread: Reverse engineering

Hi guys,
I'd like to have a small metal part reversed engineered and also fix a defect. Is the easiest path to have it 3D scanned and then have the STL file adjusted to remove the defect?
Once i get the STL file, do i just pass that along to a machinist (milled) or do they require different file formats?
thx

STL should be fine as it can be opened in most CAD/CAM packages.
